Synopsis:
Asian markets set for a mixed start to Tuesday trade. Nikkei futures down slightly while ASX and Hang Seng futures little changed. S&P 500 futures remain lower after a mostly negative session in Europe where major benchmarks fell ~1%. US markets were closed Monday for Juneteenth holiday. Australian and New Zealand bonds back under pressure. Lackluster moves in FX markets. Crude pulled back from overnight highs.
China expected to cut 1Y and 5Y loan prime rates today. Consensus is for a 10 bp cut to 1Y rate and 15 bp reduction in 5Y rate. Comes after PBOC reduced MLF rate by 10 bp last week. State Council meeting on Friday foreshadowed more forceful policy response to slowing growth though subsequent takeaways noted disappointment over lack of specifics. Economists noted potential measures will be targeted and moderate in scope.
US-China relations seemingly on a more stable footing following Secretary of State Blinken's visit to Beijing. President Xi noted "very good" progress made on improving ties and reaching agreement on some issues. Blinken's visit has improved prospect of President Biden meeting Xi later this year and spurred hopes of more regular dialogue at the senior level.
