Synopsis:
European equity markets closed mixed to higher. Greece +1.0%, France, Switzerland +0.5% led the overperformers whilst Denmark (0.7%), Austria (0.4%) and Sweden (0.3%) led the underperformers.
In political developments, headlines revolved around Dutch PM Rutte resignation after government collapsed. Rutte will leave politics and will not be available as a VVD party leader in the next parliamentary elections. Also, Swedish PM Kristersson and Turkey's President Erdoğan meeting in attempt to resolve differences and get Turkey's backing for Sweden's NATO membership. Turkey's president has said his country will support Sweden's bid to join NATO if the EU opens membership talks for his country (BBC).
Central bank narrative still in focus. Riksbank minutes reiterated hawkish spin after it hiked rates 25-bps to 3.75% on 29-Jun and signalled more tightening to come. Bank of France Governor Villeroy said rates to remain higher when tightening cycle ends. Meanwhile, BoE Governor Bailey reiterated commitment to meeting inflation target on the weekend but said it could lengthen horizon it brings prices back to target. Looking at macroeconomics, Eurozone sentix survey weaker than forecast.
In corporate news, Plus500 (PLUS.LN) issued H1 trading update and said FY23 expected to be in line with current market expectations. Further in the UK, Quartix Technologies (QTX.LN) expects FY revenue, adjusted EBITDA, and free cash flow to be in line with consensus market forecasts. Global Ports Holding (GPH.LN) also reported FY earnings.
Out of the Nordics, Raisio (RAIVV.FH) lowered FY comparable net sales outlook, specified comparable operating profit guidance. From the Dach region, Evonik Industries (ECK.GR) reported preliminary Q2 adjusted EBITDA €430-450M vs FactSet €468.1Mand lowered FY guidance. APONTIS PHARMA (APPH.GR) announced CEO Karl-Heinz Gast resigns for personal reasons; to be succeeded by Bruno Wohlschlegel.
Also in other corporate developments, Novartis (NOVN.SW) will appeal to U.S. Court of Appeals to uphold validity of Entresto combination patent; maintains 2023 guidance and mid-term outlook. Recall Novartis shares fell over 3% on Friday afternoon into the close as reports of the patent ruling hit the tape.
On M&A front, Bayer (BAYN.GR) is preparing to spin off CropScience, reports Platow Borse. Torqx Capital Partners intends to acquire Beter Bed Holding (BBED.NA) for of €6.10/share in cash cum dividend. The Telegraph reports that BT (BT.A.LN) is on high alert for a potential takeover by major shareholder Deutsche Telekom (DTE.GR)
