Synopsis:
European equity markets closed lower with pan-European indices around session lower levels. Belgium +0.7%, Portugal and Denmark both +0.5% lead the overperformers whilst Greece (1.7%), Switzerland both (1.2%), Norway and France both (1.1%) lead the decliners.
Deloitte survey showed UK CFOs most concerned over higher rates, while house price data shows dip in asking prices. PBOC kept MLF rate unchanged as expected while rolling over maturing funds. Central bank still expected to ease policy as soft June data spurs usual calls for more stimulus. No central bank comments of note from Europe, though ECB President Lagarde, Panetta and Lane to speak today ahead of next week's rate decision. Bloomberg poll said sell-side economists see 4% terminal rate. EU economic affairs commissioner Gentiloni said inflation to be near 2% target in 2024 with core taking longer to slow. Elsewhere, Russia halts grain deal with Ukraine, as expected.
A light macro-data calendar includes Italy Jun CPI +6.4% y/y vs preliminary +6.4%; 0.0% m/m vs preliminary 0.0%.
On the corporate front, luxury sector eyed after weaker than expected Q1 sales from Richemont (CFR.SW); also, TomTom (TOM2.NA) posted Q2 and raised FY23 guidance whilst - in the Nordics - Nordea Bank (NDA.SE.SS) and Bakkafrost (BAKKA.NO) also issued Q2 numbers. Gam Holding (GAM.SW) expects H1 underlying pretax loss of ~ (CHF23M) vs year-ago (CHF15.4M); board continues to strongly recommend Liontrust offer to all shareholders. Bakkafrost (BAKKA.NO) posts prelim Q2 EBIT DKK353M vs FactSet DKK582.9M due to extraordinarily low harvest volumes in Faroese farming segment and reduced average weight.
Elsewhere, Danone (BN.FP) and Carlsberg (CARL.B.DC) saw some of the their Russian assets being placed under temporary Russian state administration, whilst in France, after the Xavier Niel-Matthieu Pigasse-Moez-Alexandre Zouari trio dropped out the race, Daniel Křetínský looks set to win control of Casino (CO.FP), with shares suspended this morning; in India, Proximus (PROX.BB) acquired a 57.6% controlling stake in Route Mobile for an initial consideration INR59.22B (~€643M) in cash.
