  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets finished lower and just off the lowest levels of the session. Norway bucked the negative trend closing +0.5% higher. Financial Services and Utilities were the best performers, Technology and Real Estate the main laggards.

    • Focus on UK GDP posting strongest growth in over a year whilst industrial production much higher than expected. Trade balance missed. France July final CPI slightly higher than preliminary release whilst Spanish final CPI in-line with preliminary release. Economists now see ECB pausing rate hikes in September. ECB's Lane said interest rates will likely settle at low, but not super-low levels. Also some heightened scrutiny surrounding higher energy prices and upward pressure on breakevens. French Q2 unemployment rate higher than expected. UK buy-to-let mortgages falling into arrears surged by almost 30% in Q2. Chancellor Scholz vowed to push back against far-right AfD.

    • On the corporate front, UBS (UBSG.SW) voluntarily terminates LPA and PLB with the Swiss government and SNB; Credit Suisse repays ELA+ loan. In earnings, out of DACHs, Bechtle (BC8.GR) Q2 EPS, EBIT beat but revenue missed whilst Salzgitter (SZG.GR) final H1 earnings came in line with prelim release. METRO (B4B.GR) reported Q3 adjusted EBITDA €332M vs FactSet €325.5M. Fraport (FRA.GR) posted July Frankfurt Airport traffic statistics with passengers 6.01M, +19.7% y/y. Nordic companies with earnings releases included AKVA Group (AKVA.NO), Frøy (FROY.NO), Haypp Group (HAYPP.SS), Kamux (KAMUX.FH), Okeanis Eco Tankers (OET.NO), OLVI (OLVI.FH), Remedy Entertainment (REMEDY.FH) and SimCorp (SIM.DC). Out of Italy, UnipolSai Assicurazioni (US.IM) reports H1 net income €431M vs FactSet €354M and Unipol Gruppo (UNI.IM) reports H1 net income attributable €416M vs FactSet €373M.

    • Limited M&A news flow, UK's CMA provisionally clears UnitedHealth's (UNH) acquisition of EMIS (EMIS.LN). Of note, Italian Treasury and KKR (KKR) signed a preliminary agreement towards Telecom Italia (TIT.IM) bid with Italy to acquire 20% stake of TIM's landline grid. Elsewhere, ALTANA acquired majority stake in Von Roll Holding (ROL.SW) and announces public tender offer at CHF0.86/sh.

    • The week ahead sees Norges Bank policy decision, Germany's Economy Ministry monthly report, Spain's attempts to form a new government come to a head, UK Jul employment and inflation data, Germany Aug ZEW survey as well as earnings from Adyen (ADYEN.NA), Carlsberg (CARL.B.DC), Coloplast (COLO.B.DC), Geberit (GEBN.SW), Legal & General Group (LGEN.LN) and Straumann (STMN.SW).
