Synopsis:
Asian markets set for a mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures pointing to losses in Japan and Australia while Hang Seng tracking for a flat open. S&P 500 futures little changed following a quiet Monday session. Australian bond yields tracking overnight Treasury curve flattening. FX markets fluctuating after dollar index eased from near 10-month high. Crude holding above $90 as analysts see risk of move through $100.
Quiet start to the week as markets await direction upcoming central bank meetings. Fed widely expected to hold but dot plot will get the most attention, including whether policymakers continue to see one more rate hike this year. BOE and SNB expected to hike for a potential final time on Thursday. No change expected to China loan prime rates. BOJ also expected to stand pat on Friday.
China developers under renewed pressure with Hang Seng Properties index down 10% in past two weeks. Latest weakness comes after police detained some Evergrande wealth management staff following missed repayments. Country Garden facing repayment pressures after Monday deadline for dollar bond coupon repayment passed. Meanwhile, Beijing stepping up efforts to contain spillover risks following report state-owned financial services firms asked to provide support to troubled shadow bank Zhongreng.
China outreach continues after financial regulators met with foreign firms Monday. No substantive outcomes though takeaways viewed meeting as latest sign of renewed efforts by Beijing to revive foreign trade and investment. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Blinken met China Vice President Hang Zheng at UN sidelines on Monday, marking latest high level talks ahead possible Biden-Xi meeting in November.
