StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.19%), Hang Seng Futures (0.76%), ASX SPI 200 (0.48%), S&P Futures +0.42%

Oct 01 ,2023

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for a negative start to Monday trade. Nikkei futures pointing to losses on the open as ASX begins trade with declines. S&P 500 futures advancing after US lawmakers narrowly averted government shutdown (though this was a never really a major concern for markets). China and other Asian markets closed for Golden Week holiday. Dollar edging higher against majors. Crude steady after logging a fourth weekly gain in five.

    • China official manufacturing PMI showed factory activity returned to expansion for first time since March. Contrasted somewhat with Caixin PMI, which showed manufacturing slowed (though remained in expansion). Both showed stronger output and pickup in inflation, but exports were weak. While PMIs add to signs of economic stabilization, activity remains weak amid headwinds from soft external demand and real estate crunch.

    • In other economic developments, South Korean exports declined at a slower pace in September as car exports rose and semiconductor shipments shrunk at slowest pace in 12 months. Australian house prices rose at a quicker pace, though quarterly rate of growth slowed amid rebound in supply. BOJ Tankan expected to show another rise in manufacturing and non-manufacturer sentiment. Japan final PMI also on tap along with BOJ Summary of Opinions.

    • Fears of a policy mistake/hard landing remain key overhang on sentiment with many expecting financial conditions to tighten further as Fed and other central banks stick with their higher-for-longer stance. Oil spike also playing into concerns around sticky inflation that keeps alive prospects of further tightening. Still, markets pricing in ~65% chance of no further rate hikes in 2023 (vs Fed's median forecast for one more). Also anticipate rate cuts sooner than Fed is projecting.
