StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.27%, Hang Seng Futures (0.06%), ASX SPI 200 +0.07%, S&P Futures (0.16%)

Oct 17 ,2023

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised to open mostly higher Wednesday. Futures in Japan and Australia were positive, while Hong Kong was marginally lower. US contracts lower after S&P 500 ended little change while Nasdaq lagged after Biden administration confirmed tougher tech access curbs on China. Other tech leads negative with SOX and Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index lower. Treasuries were notably weaker with the curve flattening, taking 2y yield to 17-year highs and 10y back to highest in nearly 16 years. Dollar trading mostly firmer early Wednesday, with euro outperforming. Crude oil futures up firmly from session lows, gold marginally higher, Bitcoin flat.

    • Stronger US retail sales were credited for the rise in bond yields. Higher market-implied probability of a Fed rate hike in January contrasts with expectations that Powell will endorse peak rate theme underpinning bullish talking points alongside earnings optimism. Tech weakness came into focus after confirmation of additional restrictions on US exports to China. Markets continue to monitor Israel-Hamas conflict, though latest developments did not impact market narrative.

    • Regional focus now squarely on China GDP and activity data. Consensus looks for Q3 growth to soften back below the government's 5% target and mixed activity. Lack of major stimulus continues to be highlighted in analyst commentary and macro surveys, though prospects for dramatic fiscal expansion still seen remote. Beijing reportedly told state-owned banks to roll over local government debt with longer terms and lower rates in an effort to reduce risks. RBA Governor Bullock's speech to attract attention following yesterday's hawkish minutes. Country Garden dollar coupon deadline Wednesday remains an overhang with no reports bondholders have received payment.
