StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.27%), Hang Seng Futures (0.12%), ASX SPI 200 +0.34%, S&P Futures +0.04%

Nov 28 ,2023

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Nikkei and Hang Seng futures pointing to mild losses on the open while ASX gains in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes finished higher in another quiet session. Australian bonds extending rebound following latest Treasury rally. Yen strengthening, highest against dollar since mid-September. Crude up marginally following bullish API crude inventory data.

    • Overnight focus was on remarks from Fed officials, including perceived dovish tinge to Governor Waller's comment suggesting possibility of rate cut. While markets moved to price in additional Fed easing in 2024 following his comment, amount of rate cuts now being priced in (~90 bp) ties into concerns markets again overestimating likelihood and extent of dovish pivot next year. Waller's comment was also made in context of academic theory and Taylor Rule.

    • RBNZ widely expected to leave OCR unchanged today. Previews anticipate central bank will lower near-term CPI forecasts, but also adopt firm tone in policy statement in effort push back against dovish market expectations. Markets pricing in rate cuts beginning in late H1 2024, though RBNZ not expected to make meaningful changes to OCR track as it continues to signal extended pause through 2024.

    • Australian monthly inflation forecast to have weakened in October, though previews note underlying CPI may show smaller decline given persistence of sticky services inflation. Policy implications likely to be limited given shortcomings of monthly CPI series. Markets further dialed back likelihood of a December rate hike following softer-than-expected October retail sales and cautious comments from Governor Bullock on Tuesday noting RBA needs to be a "little careful" with further tightening.

    • Fairly quiet elsewhere. Anticipation building ahead of OPEC+ meeting on 30-Nov amid uncertainty whether meeting will be delayed again due to ongoing disagreement over output levels. Some interest in whether Adani-group of stocks will extend Tuesday's big rally after Indian Supreme Court reserved judgement on Hindenburg short sell report. Thai central bank expected to leave policy unchanged.
