StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.05%, Hang Seng Futures +0.38%, ASX SPI 200 +0.11%, S&P Futures +0.08%

Nov 29 ,2023

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for a mixed start to Thursday trade. Nikkei futures pointing to flat open while Hang Seng futures higher. ASX logging mild gain in initial trade. US contracts little changed following another quiet offshore session. Australian and New Zealand yields following another move lower in Treasury rates in aftermath of Fed Governor Waller's dovish remarks. Yen strengthening as dollar index hovers above early August lows. Crude down marginally amid lingering OPEC+ production uncertainty.

    • Lower yield backdrop remains the big story with latest move down attributed to dovish-leaning remarks from Fed Governor Waller on Tuesday. Market bets increasingly reflect expectations for a first Fed cut in May '24 with nearly 100bp in easing seen for the full year. Widening contrast to September SEP and higher-for-longer messaging from central bankers driving some concern about market's overcooking rate cut bets. However, also thoughts rate pricing reflects expectations of a steeper growth slowdown.

    • China manufacturing PMI forecast to have ticked higher in November though with activity stuck in contraction for another month. Marks first read on factory activity last month after October data showed notable slowdown in industrial profit growth while PMIs revealed shrinking orders for both exports and imports. Attention turning to 2024 policy outlook with analysts eyeing upcoming CEWC for another stimulus push.

    • BOK expected to keep benchmark rate unchanged at today's meeting. Policy stance expected to remain restrictive for some time with board members yet to discern clear evidence of peak inflation. However, BOK pivot predictions align with expectations of Fed easing from 2Q24. Attention will also be on economic forecast updates after Governor Rhee flagged possible forecast overhaul due to geopolitical uncertainties.

    • OPEC+ meeting the other focus today. Online gathering follows flurry of headlines over past week highlighting African pushback against further cuts to their output quota. Latest reports suggest Saudis may push for another 1Mbpd production cut. However, continuation of existing output levels into 2024 may still be most likely outcome. CME's OPEC Watch Tool shows 55% probability of no change to output levels and 38% chance of an output cut.
