  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed mixed in narrow ranges. Quiet start comes after four consecutive weeks of gains. Personal care, media and retail outperformed. Basic resources, energy and technology lagged.

    • Eurozone inflation slowed more than expected last week, which has seen hawkish policymakers warn against premature policy change (Germany's Nagel with latest). Markets are pricing in an 80% chance of ECB easing in March and 125 bps worth of rate cuts for 2024, up from 80 bps at the end of November.

    • On the macro front, German trade surplus widened amid larger drop in imports due to lower energy prices. Softer Swiss inflation data supports another SNB pause next week. Spain unemployment data worse than expected. Survey showed UK workers more confidence over job prospects.

    • In earnings, Ryanair Holdings (RYA.ID) and Wizz Air Holdings (WIZZ.LN) posted Nov passengers stats whilst Volvo Car (VOLCAR.B.SS) reported Nov car sales. Petrofac (PFC.LN) shares gained +22.4% after it released its business update saying it has a healthy pipeline scheduled for award in period to end of 2024 but no longer expects to meet guidance previously provided for full year cash flow.

    • On the M&A front, 888 (888.LN) rejected 156p/sh indicative approach from Playtech (PTEC.LN) reports the Sunday Times. Press reports also suggest UBS (UBSG.SW) to invest in US as part of strategy to garner $150B of annual new money, and CEO Ermotti aims to identify potential successor in the next three years. Roche (ROG.SW) to acquire Carmot Therapeutics (+CRMO) for $2.7B up front. Further out of DACHs, wires reported that Commerzbank (CBK.GR) has approached sovereign wealth funds to gauge their interest in buying stake of up to 9.9%.

    • In other notable company news, UCB (UCB.BB) announced EU Commission approval of Zilbrysq for the treatment of adults with generalized myasthenia gravis; Sixt (SIX2.GR) will eliminate Tesla cars from its fleet.
