Feb 20 ,2024
Synopsis:
Asian markets set for weaker start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong. ASX also lower in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat following after tech and small caps led market retreat overnight. Australian bond yields reversing lower, tracking earlier Treasury curve bull steepening. FX markets flat with dollar index near one-week low. Gold and crude fluctuating after easing from earlier highs.
Big corporate focus is on NVDA, which fell 4% Tuesday ahead of its Q4 earnings on Wednesday. Stock up over 50% since last quarter's earnings and has eclipsed both Google and Amazon in market cap. Group has been big winner from AI secular growth theme and while this fits with notion of a high bar, its revenue and EPS have comfortable exceeded expectations in past three quarters.
January FOMC minutes today's macro highlight. Expected to show pushback against market expectations around Fed's rate cut path after Chair Powell seemingly dismissed prospects of a March cut. Minutes may also reinforce higher-for-longer bias given inflation concerns. Policymakers have since voiced caution on rate cuts while hotter-than-expected CPI and PPI prints have led markets to dial back expected 2024 rate cuts.
China's larger-than-expected cut to 5Y LPR inviting usual debate over policy efficacy with commentators pointing out past rate cuts have failed to revive confidence in property market. Some stimulus advocates argue deeper rate cuts needed to account for deflation, complimented by meaningful fiscal support to boost consumption, and additional property measures to accelerate housing completions.
