  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended higher Thursday. Follows positive close on Wednesday. Real estate, utilities and constr/mtls outperform. Media , energy and tech the main laggards.

    • Markets higher following softer US June CPI reading, which came in cooler on both headline and core measures. Below-consensus weekly initial claims also helping ease worries about weakening growth. Data likely to further firm expectations for a September Fed rate cut (and possibly energize thoughts about a July move).

    • Macro focus in Europe on UK monthly activity data, which surprised on the upside. Latest monthly UK GDP estimate from the ONS showed +0.4% expansion in May versus consensus +0.2% and prior 0.0%. Source of upturn came from +0.2% expansion in industrial production, services output increased +0.3% and construction jumped +1.9%. While construction outperformed, services still the largest contributor to monthly GDP growth. Overnight, RICS house price balance missed but most agents now think the decline in UK house prices has now run its course. Comments from BoE's Mann and this week's remarks by chief economist Pill and MPC member Haskel dampens August rate cut expectations somewhat. Elsewhere, final German inflation in line with flash.

    • On the reporting front, out of DACHS region, Gerresheimer (GXI.GR) Q2 revenue missed; aEBITDA beat; confirmed FY guidance; expects material upturn in H2. Suedzucker (SZU.GR) Q1 EBIT, revenue missed; confirmed FY outlook. Barry Callebaut (BARN.SW) 9M revenue beat; reiterated FY guidance. In the UK, Hays (HAS.LN) LFL Net Fee Growth came short of expectations (15%) vs consensus (12%), John Wood Group prelim. H1 adjusted EBITDA miss, however reaffirmed FY and 2025 outlooks, RS Group (RS1.LN) said trading in Q1 was in line with expectations while Severn Trent (SVT.LN) financial performance for the year remains on track and continues to expect to perform in line with guidance. In the Nordics, Ambu (AMBU.B.DC) preliminary Q3 revenue beat, DNB Bank (DNB.NO) Q2 revenue, net income, CET1 all beat. Tryg (TRYG.DC) Q2 net income beat and pays dividend of DKK 1.95 per share. In other corporate news, Deutsche Lufthansa (LHA.GR) to undertake further austerity measures amid high costs and falling revenues.

    • On the M&A newsflow, press reports suggest Credit Agricole (ACA.FP) is in advanced talks to acquire Societe Generale (GLE.FP ) Hanseatic bank. Vitol launched €1.60/share mandatory tender offer for Saras (SRS.IM).

    • Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, notable releases will include, amongst others, France and Spain Jun final CPI.
