Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Monday trade. ASX opens with mild gains as Hong Kong resumes following Friday holiday. Japan closed for Heath-Sports day holiday. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes notched fifth straight weekly gain. Australia and New Zealand bonds under pressure as Treasury curve continues to steepen. Yen nearing lowest against dollar since early August. Crude and base metals markets weakening in China press conference aftermath. Bitcoin remains range bound.
At Saturday press conference, China's finance minister flagged targeted fiscal policy measures to support growth. Package includes raising debt ceiling, tapping unused funding from special purpose bonds, and measures to stabilize property market. Press takeaways noted absence of headline figure after sell-side previews predicted package of up to CNY2.0T. Also lacked new policies to boost consumption.
China pricing pressures dissipated in September with CPI inflation unexpectedly softening. Figure propped up by volatile food prices with core inflation flatlining to lowest since Feb-2021. PPI deflation also worsened by more than expected. Data underscored continued weakness in domestic demand before authorities unveiled flurry of stimulus announcements in mid-September.
