StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.34%), Hang Seng Futures +0.58%, ASX SPI 200 +0.15%, S&P Futures (0.09%)

Oct 22 ,2024

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling mild opening declines in Japan while Hang Seng tracking for initial gains. ASX up slightly in initial trade. S&P 500 futures touch lower afterhours. Australian and New Zealand bonds stabilizing following recent yield backup. FX markets steady with dollar index holding near early August high. Crude pulling back while gold flat after hitting fresh record high. Bitcoin range bound.

    • Bond yield backup the big story this week, reflecting no-landing narrative traction, dampened disinflation momentum, dialing back of Fed rate cut odds, and pickup in GOP sweep expectations. Traders positioning for more volatility with US election and November Fed meeting looming as key risk events. Treasury put call spread widening with BofA also pointing out Treasury selling likely forcing CTAs out of long positions.

    • China stimulus headlines continue to roll through with press citing think tank proposal calling for additional fiscal support via special government bond issuance to bolster social welfare. Also called for a CNY2T ($281B) stock market stabilization fund. China authorities have flagged fiscal support over recent weeks with markets eyeing upcoming NPC Standing Committee meeting for possible details and headline stimulus figure.
