Nov 21 ,2024
Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan while Hang Seng futures flat. ASX also higher in initial trade. US contracts flat afterhours. Australian and New Zealand bond yields touch lower after Treasuries were mostly weaker overnight. FX markets steady after yen strengthened following Governor Ueda's remarks Thursday. Crude flat after pushing back above $70. Gold also steady. Bitcoin edging closer to $100K.
Japan core inflation eased by less than forecast in October, remaining above 2% target. Comes after BOJ Governor Ueda suggested upcoming meetings 'live' with rate decision to factor in upcoming data and information (though views remain split between Dec or Jan rate hike). Ueda stated central bank will "seriously" consider impact of FX moves on inflation and economic outlook. USDJPY down 1% after reaching four-month high last week.
With Trump tariffs looming, China on Thursday announced measures to aid trade sector with financial support for exporters/importers and efforts to expand shipments of agricultural products. While exports have been a growth driver in 2024, economists anticipate tariffs will negatively impact volumes upon implementation, weighing on growth and necessitating more forceful stimulus to mitigate the drag.
Fallout continues from US indictment of Gautam Adani after Adani units experienced heavy losses Thursday and pulled Nifty 50 down to lowest since June. Adani dollar bonds also had worst day since early 2023 with Moody's assessing developments as credit negative. Rupee fell to record low as Adani turmoil drove more foreign outflows from equities following October's record withdrawal.
