Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Monday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Hong Kong and flat open in Japan. ASX unchanged in initial trade. S&P 500 futures flat. Australian and New Zealand bonds strengthening after Treasuries firmed on Friday. Dollar strengthening against other currencies. Crude moving higher while gold and base metals weakening. Bitcoin back to $99K.
China official PMI showed further pickup in manufacturing growth with new orders and output improving while export declines narrowed. However, non-manufacturing PMI unexpectedly fell back to 50.0 dividing line amid drag from construction. Data seemed to play into stabilization narrative with Caixin manufacturing PMI also forecast to show stronger growth in factory activity last month.
In Nikkei interview, BOJ Governor Ueda said rate hikes nearing with economic data on track. Remarks follow hotter-than-expected Tokyo core CPI that strengthened near-term rate hike expectations. FX comments also leaned hawkish, warning of countermeasures if yen weakens after inflation starts to rise above 2%. Market-implied odds of December rate hike have firmed to ~66%.
Asian manufacturing PMIs dot economic calendar Monday with focus on extent of China headwinds. South Korea CPI and Q3 GDP follow pickup in growth concerns that underpinned last week's BOK rate cut. Household consumption will be key focus of Australian Q3 GDP after RBA warned of downside risks. US nonfarm payrolls forecast to show rebound in headlines employment as markets price in December rate cut. Fed Chair Powell is also slated to remark this week.
