StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.18%), Hang Seng Futures (0.29%), ASX SPI 200 (0.77%), S&P Futures +0.03%

Dec 19 ,2024

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian market set for negative start to Friday trade. Japan and Hong Kong futures traded lower as ASX opens with steep declines. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures nudging higher after US indexes extended post-Fed losses on Thursday. Australian and New Zealand bonds under pressure following aggressive Treasury curve steepening. Yen weakness the big story in FX markets with dollar index at highest since 2022. Crude and gold fell at least 1%. Bitcoin below $100K, down 11% from early week high.

    • Fallout from Fed's hawkish rate cut continued with long-end Treasury yields rising further, resulting in steepest yield curve since mid-2022 (2/10Y spread now at -25 bp from -6 bp two weeks ago). Takeaways hawkish with some economists interpreting SEP, forward guidance tweak and Powell's remarks as indication Fed's easing cycle nearing an end amid reemergence of inflation as a chief concern.

    • Yen selling accelerated following BOJ Governor Ueda's press conference late Thursday, in which he expressed lack of urgency to tighten after central bank left rates on hold. Market-implied probability of January hike stood at ~50% following his remarks. Economists noted while Ueda's comments did not preclude January rate hike, likelihood has diminished with Ueda also noting wage developments will become clearer by March or April.

    • China expected to keep 1Y and 5Y loan prime rates unchanged. While record low China bond yields, yuan weakness and bank margin pressures cited as constraints, expectations of further easing reinforced last week after authorities flagged RRR and rate cuts next year amid an "appropriately loose" policy stance. However, odds of December action considered remote after PBOC recently warned financial institutions on bond trading risks amid falling yields.
