  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed higher, near best levels, with fresh record highs for STOXX 600 and FTSE 100. Follows mostly firmer levels on Wednesday. Benchmark Gilt up 1 bp after BoE decision. Dollar softer versus yen, firmer elsewhere. Sterling under pressure following BoE rate cut. Oil up. Gold down. Industrial metals mostly higher.

    • Sentiment positive with early week volatility ebbing with no further tariff developments. Earnings taking precedence with AMZN due after the close today following number of higher-profile disappointments in US tech, healthcare and auto. Some focus on more docile China response following Trump's tariff announcement. USPS reversed initial decision to ban all inbound parcels from China, which follows US decision to revoke de minimis tariff exemption that sparked concerns about impact on operations of China e-commerce vendors. Uncertainty also surrounds prospects of a Trump-Xi phone call with nothing scheduled so far. Russia also said prepartions for Putin-Trump meeting at adavanced level.

    • In Central banks, BoE cut key rate by 25 bps to 4.5%, as expected. Vote split more dovish with two members backing larger 50 bps move, including longstanding hawk Catherine Mann.

    • On macro data front, UK consumer inflation expectations survey eased in January. German factory orders record big jump in December. Construction PMI shows euro area activity continues to contract, while UK sees first fall since February 2024. Eurozone retail sales missed.

    • Meanwhile, some of the UK's biggest retailers have called on government to follow Trump's lead and close a tax loophole being exploited by China's Shein and Temu. Press reports suggest PM Starmer may dismiss Reeves in order to shore up popularity. Elsewhere, French PM Bayrou's budget was approved after surviving first confidence vote. French press send left-wing alliance is also close to collapse after Socialists decided not to censure government and allow adoption of budget.

    • In corporate news, ArcelorMittal (MT.NA) reports Q4 adj EPS $0.52 vs consensus $0.54 and hikes divi by 10%. ING Groep (INGA.NA) reports Q4 net income €1.15B vs consensus €1.22B. In France, SOITEC (SOI.FP) reports Q3 revenue €226M vs FactSet €250.9M [3 est, €247-256M]; lowers FY25 guidance. Societe Generale (GLE.FP) Q4 net income €1.04B vs consensus €814M; proposes distribution of €2.18/sh. In the DACH region, Siemens Healthineers (SHL.GR) reports Q1 EPS €0.51 ex-items vs consensus €0.47. Aurubis (NDA.GR) reports Q1 Operating Net Income €99M vs consensus €98M. Out of the Nordics, Ørsted (ORSTED.DC) announces adjustments to business plan and provides updated financial targets and policies. Telenor (TEL.NO), Volvo Car (VOLCAR.B.SS), GN Store Nord (GN.DC) are also out with their respective earnings update. UK companies morning earnings: AstraZeneca (AZN.LN), Compass Group (CPG.LN) and Anglo American (AAL.LN).

    • In M&A news: Sidenor to increase its offer for Talgo to near €5/sh - El Confidencial.

    • Looking ahead to Monday's calendar (see - Europe Week Ahead: 03-Feb to 07-Feb attached) Kongsberg Gruppen (KOG.NO), Yara International (YAR.NO), Banco de Sabadell (SAB.SM), Saab (SAAB.B.SS), Skanska (SKA.B.SS), Danske Bank (DANSKE.DC), EMS-Chemie (EMSN.SW), Aperam (APAM.NA), Orange Belgium (OBEL.BB) will be among other names to update investors, whilst the macro-calendar releases will include Germany Dec trade balance, industrial production, France Dec trade balance, Spain Dec industrial production, Switzerland Jan consumer confidence, Norway Dec manufacturing production, Denmark Dec manufacturing production, UK Jan house price index - Halifax, Austria Jan PPI.
