Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Hong Kong. ASX flat in initial trade. US contracts unchanged following directionless Tuesday session. Australian bond yields higher following earlier Treasury curve bear steepening. FX markets steady after dollar index pulled back from one-week high. Crude off overnight highs while gold remains flat. Bitcoin unchanged after retreating to one-week low.
Nothing incremental from Fed Chair Powell's testimony before Senate Banking Committee, where he hewed closely to Fed's stance on not being in a hurry to cut interest rates amid elevated inflation. Powell also repeated too soon to consider impact of tariffs. Speaking separately, NY Fed President Williams and Cleveland Fed President also stressed patience mantra amid economic uncertainties and argued more time needed to assess impact of policies.
Markets awaiting US January CPI on Wednesday amid consensus forecast for core inflation to have nudged down on a y/y basis. Follows dovish December CPI data that led markets back to pricing in two rate cuts in 2025. However, recent survey-based measures showed mixed picture on inflation expectations. Moreover, January's print comes amid concerns disinflation momentum is stalling just as tariffs threaten to put more upward pressure on goods prices.
