StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (0.09%), Hang Seng Futures +0.33%, ASX SPI 200 (0.33%), S&P Futures +0.09%

Feb 17 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling mild opening gains in Hong Kong and flat start in Japan. Australia lower in initial trade. US contracts flat after markets were closed Monday for Presidents Day. European equities firmed overnight with defense stocks surging amid focus on Ukraine peace talks. Australian bond yields down 1-2 bp ahead of expected RBA rate cut. FX markets steady after dollar weakened against yen, Aussie and yuan. Bitcoin remains in tight range.

    • RBA expected to lower cash rate by 25 bp to 4.10% at Tuesday's meeting. Rate cut expectations almost unanimous after Australian Q4 underlying inflation undershot consensus and RBA's own projections. However, any rate cut expected to be accompanied by cautious guidance that reemphasizes data dependency and includes discussions about two-sided risks to economic outlook. Governor Bullock also seen avoiding any signaling for April's meeting.

    • China President Xi's meeting with tech leaders on Monday generated a fair bit of attention with Jack Ma and DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng among those in attendance. Xi's expressions of support dovetailed with China lawmakers moving to review laws aimed at promoting private sector development. Beijing's private sector embrace was seen putting traction behind China investability narrative, with strategists turning more optimistic on equities.
