Synopsis:
Asian market set for positive start to Monday trade. Nikkei, Hang Seng and ASX futures ended little changed on Friday though S&P and Nasdaq futures up over 1% this morning following weekend trade developments. Australian bonds weaker with curve steepening. Dollar firming against majors. Crude and copper strengthening alongside equity futures while gold under pressure. Bitcoin hovering near early February highs.
US-China talks in Geneva characterized as positive with Treasury Secretary Bessent highlighting substantial progress and Trump noting total reset was negotiated during meeting. China Vice Premier He Lifeng described meeting as important first step with two sides reaching consensus on a series of issues. Bessent promised more details on Monday. Nothing mentioned on tariff relief though Trump on Friday 80% tariff rate seemed right while press sources noted White House could reduce tariffs to below 60% depending on progress made.
In other macro news, China deflation pressures persisted in April with consumer prices shrinking at similar pace and factory-gate prices contracting at quickest pace in six months. Japan PM Ishiba repeated call for US to drop all tariffs. Busy weekend of geopolitical developments with India and Pakistan reaching tentative truce brokered by US. Putin and Zelensky agreed to direct talks in Istanbul on 15-May without preconditions. Iran signaled progress in nuclear talks with US.
April US CPI the week's headline event with core and headline inflation forecast to have picked up. Markets will also be eyeing latest reads on US consumer sentiment and inflation expectations. Across Asia, Japan preliminary Q1 GDP forecast to show economy fell back into contraction. April Australia jobs data and Q1 wage price index the final major data points before May RBA meeting. Singapore Q1 GDP, India CPI, and China credit data also due out. Earnings continue to roll with Japan autos, banks, and China tech platforms slated to report.
