StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +2.76%, Hang Seng Futures 0.00%, ASX SPI 200 +1.17%, S&P Futures (0.06%)

May 12 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Monday trade. Futures pointing to opening rally in Japan and Australia, and muted start in Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures flat after index moved closer to recouping YTD loss. Australian bonds under pressure, mirroring earlier Treasury curve bear flattening. Dollar steady after rallying against majors on tariff relief developments. Crude little changed while gold nursing heavy losses amid Monday's risk-on move. Bitcoin fluctuating near early February highs.

    • Markets carried forward momentum from Monday's de-escalation of US-China trade tensions that saw both sides announce significant tariff reductions. Tariff relief much more aggressive than expected going into weekend talks in Geneva, fueling rebound in 'American exceptionalism' trades with dollar rallying alongside stocks. Treasuries came under pressure with markets now just pricing in two Fed rate cuts in 2025. Nasdaq Golden Dragon index surged 5% overnight

    • Market optimism driven largely by headline effects of tariff reduction though US-China talks have left open several questions. Trump said China agreed to open up, though did not provide any additional details. Treasury Secretary Bessent said talks aimed at rebalancing trade though no details on how/whether China agreed to reduce business barriers or if Beijing will undertake more purchase commitments. Two sides agreed to establish mechanism to continue discussions though any trade deal seen long way off.
