  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets ended higher with pan-European indices closing around session highs. Netherlands +1.8%, followed by France, Portugal, Greece all up ~+1.4% led outperformers whilst Denmark (2.2%) was the negative outlier.

    • Market strength followed positive US-China talks in Geneva, which has seen significant de-escalation of trade tensions. US cut levies on Chinese goods to 30% from 145% for 90 days. China lower levies on US goods to 10% from 125% for the same period. US Treasury Secretary Bessent said neither US nor China want to decouple. Also in geopolitical developments, UK President Zelenskiy may meet Russia's Putin on 15-May following weekend of diplomatic pressure by US and Europe. European leaders said meeting is conditional on Russia beginning a 30-day ceasefire on Monday, though no signs of Russia scaling back attacks. Europe leaders have threatened sanctions and said no talks until there is a ceasefire, but Trump putting pressure on Zelenskiy to negotiate

    • Quiet macro calendar in Europe. Comments from ECB officials highlighted division on governing council in rate outlook. BoE deputy governor Lombardelli backed gradual pace of rate cuts. Survey showed number of UK firms expecting to increase headcount in the next three months has fallen to lowest level in the past decade, outside of pandemic.

    • In corporate news, UniCredit (UCG.IM) traded higher following strong Q1 update. In the DACH region, Evonik Industries (EVK.GR) posted Q1 Adjusted EPS €0.59 vs consensus €0.45 and confirmed FY guidance. Hochtief (HOT.GR) reported Q1 operational EPS €2.22 vs year-ago €1.89 and also reiterated its FY guidance. 1&1 AG (1U1.GR), United Internet (UTDI.GR), Hypoport (HYQ.GR) and IONOS Group (IOS.GR) also posted earnings updates. In the UK, IG Group Holdings (IGG.LN) expects FY25 total revenue and adj PBT to meet or slightly exceed upper end of current range of consensus of £1.05B and £516.3M respectively.

    • Elsewhere, Novo Nordisk (NOVO.B.DC) traded lower as Eli Lilly reported that its SURMOUNT-5 trial of Zepbound met primary endpoint. Also in pharma, Valneva (VLA.FP) pared earlier losses following company's press release after FDA and CDC recommended pausing use of Chikungunya vaccine IXCHIQ for elderly individuals.

    • On M&A front, PPF IM LTD revealed a €7.00/sh offer for ProSiebenSat.1 (PSM.SM), with the board of ProSiebenSat.1 welcoming the offer. Banco de Sabadell (SAB.SM) is reportedly exploring a merger with Abanca as an alternative to BBVA (BBVA.SM) takeover bid. In other corporate developments, Clariant (CLN.SW) rejected Dow Europe's allegations against four companies related to the 2020 competition law infringement. Virgin Media O2 to combine its business arm with Daisy Group, Sky News reported.
