Synopsis:
European indices ended mostly mixed to higher. Autos/Parts, Retail and Travel/Leisure the best performers whilst Real Estate, Food/Beverage and Insurance lag. Follows broad strength on Monday. Markets processing Monday's de-escalation of US-China trade tensions that saw both sides announce significant tariff reductions. Tariff relief much more aggressive than expected going into weekend talks in Geneva.
On macro-calendar, UK labor market data showed ongoing easing with unemployment rate up and wage growth ease, consistent with recent surveys, which have seen weakening in conditions. ILO unemployment rate edged up to 4.5% versus prior 4.4%, as expected. German May ZEW economic sentiment data improved sharply to 25.2 vs consensus 13.7 and prior (14.0). ZEW highlighted that the formation of the new German government, progress on the tariff disputes and stabilizing inflation were contributory factors. However, despite the sentiment rebound, the current situation indicator weakened to -82.0 versus consensus -77.0 and prior -81.2.
Amidst a busy morning in terms of earnings, out of DACHs, Bayer AG (BAYN.GR), Munich Re (MUV2.GR), Hannover Re (HNR1.GR) and Fraport (FRA.GR) reported before the open. Elsewhere, Grifols (GRF.SM) shares are higher post better-than-expected Q1 numbers. In the UK, DCC (DCC.LN), Bytes Technology Group (BYIT.LN), Marston's (MARS.LN) and On The Beach Group (OTB.LN) among other names to issue updates.
In M&A news, media reports Worldline (WLN.FP) is mulling the sale of its India business in a deal worth ~$200M. ABB Limited (ABBN.SW) also reportedly considering sale of robotics business as alternative to spinoff. Unicaja Banco (UNI.SM) denies media report it has held informal talks with Banco Sabadell (SAB.SM) over merger. Galapagos (GLPG.NA) announced it has decided to re-evaluate the previously proposed separation and will explore all strategic alternatives for its existing businesses; group also announced CEO change effective immediately.
Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, notable releases will include, amongst others, Germany Apr final CPI amd Spain Apr final CPI.
