Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Australia, and negative start in Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures flat after US equities added to gains Thursday. Australian bonds rebounding, tracking earlier Treasury curve bull steepening that followed softer PPI and retail sales. FX markets steady after dollar ended little changed on major crosses. Crude muted following Thursday pullback on Iran nuclear deal headlines. Gold extending rebound. Bitcoin flat.
USTR Greer in South Korea for APEC after meeting China trade negotiators on sidelines Thursday. However, nothing substantive emerged following weekend de-escalation. Other Asian ministers also aiming for meetings with Greer as talks continue. In other developments, US-Japan negotiators arranging third round of talks for this month though auto and agricultural discussions, and divisions over tariffs, mentioned as roadblocks. Trump repeated claim India offered to drop tariffs to zero as Delhi trade officials prepare to travel to US this week for talks.
Tech in headlines with Alibaba (9988.HK) down 8% in US after quarterly revenue growth underwhelmed amid China consumer weakness. FT sources highlighting concerns among Trump officials that plans to put China chipmaking firms on export blacklist will hurt efforts on trade talks. China also raised objections to US export controls after Commerce Department confirmed plans to rescind Biden-era AI diffusion rules while warning use of Huawei Ascend chips a violation of rules.
