May 19 ,2025

  • Synopsis:]

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures little changed in postmarket trade after stocks shrugged off Moody's credit rating downgrade. Australian bonds rallying ahead of expected RBA rate cut. Treasuries ended mixed Monday with curve steepening. Dollar steady after sustaining declines in aftermath of Moody's downgrade. Gold little changed after finishing higher Monday. Crude unchanged. Bitcoin flat near record high.

    • Overnight, Moody's US credit rating downgrade had limited market impact with stocks and Treasuries recouping earlier losses. Sell-side takeaways downplayed near-term risks though downgrade nonetheless seen reinforcing longer-term concerns about upward pressure on bond yields from continued expansion of deficits and debt. Elsewhere, Monday Fedspeak continued to stress patience with two officials flagging holding pattern until September at earliest. Strategists also highlighted waning positioning tailwind, dampened retail buying.

    • Market also weighing mixed updates on trade negotiations after Treasury Secretary Bessent and President Trump warned tariffs could revert to higher levels if insufficient progress is made before expiry of reciprocal tariff pause. On Monday China also took issue with US curbs on Huawei, arguing actions undermined consensus reached in Geneva. Still, NEC Director Hassett said Monday 15 countries close to a deal and recent press articles have highlighted signs of progress in talks involving EU, Japan, South Korea and India.

    • RBA expected to cut cash rate by 25 bp at Tuesday's meeting, reflecting disinflation momentum, weak consumption and tariff-related risks to global growth. However, Governor Bullock seen pushing back against speculation of follow-up easing as central bank navigates two-sided risks to the outlook and tight labor market. China also expected to cut 1Y and 5Y loan prime rates after PBOC reduced 7D reverse repo rate by 10 bp earlier this month. Reuters sources added China banks will reduce deposit rates from Tuesday. .
