Synopsis:
Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Australia, and flat start in Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian and New Zealand bonds rebounding after Treasuries firmed following recent yield backup. Dollar steady on major crosses after partially recouping declines on Thursday. Crude extending losses following latest report ofanother ramp in OPEC+ production in July. Gold little changed. Bitcoin flat after making another record high.
Speaking at G7, BOJ Governor Ueda refrained from commenting on JGB turbulence, noting only central bank will keep close eye on the market. Follows Thursday remarks from board member Noguchi downplaying need for major changes to tapering plan and that intervention should be reserved only for severe disruption. Underwhelming 20Y auction heightened attention on backup in long-dated JGB yields this week with strategists debating drivers including government funding needs, QT, elevated inflation and positioning/technicals.
Somewhat better news on trade front after Commerce Secretary Lutnick talked up expectations of trade deals over the summer. Comes as Japan's top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa begins third round of trade talks with US from Friday. No details on what will be discussed with Akazawa having reiterated Japan's demands for elimination of all tariffs. Reuters sources this week noted Japan mulling offer of increased corn and soybean purchases, cooperation on shipbuilding and revising imported vehicle inspection standards.
In economic news, Japan April CPI showed core inflation rose by more than expected to highest since Jan-2023. New Zealand Q1 retail sales unexpectedly experienced another quarter of growth. In other developments, G7 finance ministers meeting communique made scant mention of tariffs while making only vague reference to impact of 'de minimis' Chinese goods imports. White House's chief economist rejected notion US seeking to insert FX pledges in trade deals and backed strong dollar policy.
