Synopsis:
Asian markets set for positive start to Wednesday trade. Futures signalling opening gains in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures flat following Tuesday's risk-on session. Australian and New Zealand bonds strengthening following overnight Treasury curve flattening. FX markets steady after dollar rebounded against yen. Crude off earlier lows. Gold little changed after retreating 2% on Tuesday. Bitcoin erasing overnight gains.
Wednesday's 40Y JGB auction in spotlight following recent focus on long-end yield backup and accompanying concerns around fiscal deficits, inflation and BOJ QT. Bond markets seeing some reprieve this week amid speculation Japan's MoF may dial back issuance of super-long bonds. Nikkei reported that ahead of meeting with primary dealers on 20-Jun, MoF sent questionnaire Monday gauging views on issuance and current market situation, sparking speculation about adjustment of superlong issuance.
On economic front, RBNZ expected to reduce OCR by 25 bp to 3.25% at Wednesday's meeting. Pickup up global growth headwinds due to tariffs and US-China trade war seen as main downside risks to New Zealand growth and inflation outlook. Central bank expected to retain its easing bias. Updated OCR track will get usual attention with economists looking for lower terminal rate, implying at least one more rate cut through 2025. Elsewhere, Australian April CPI forecast to show slight moderation in inflation.
In corporate developments, media sources noted Nippon Steel (5401.JP) expected to close acquisition of US Steel (X) at original offer of $55 per share. US lawmaker said government will receive golden share in US Steel as condition of approval. PDD Holdings (PDD) reported top and bottom line miss, reflecting trade war impact and competitive pressures in China. Group also flagged hit to profitability from price adjustments. NVDA to report Wednesday post-US close with analysts flagging mixed takeaways given macro, US/China trade uncertainty, ongoing DeepSeek overhang.
