StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures (1.30%), Hang Seng Futures (0.66%), ASX SPI 200 (0.20%), S&P Futures (0.21%)

May 29 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures slightly weaker afterhours. Australian bonds rebounding, taking cues from Treasury reversal overnight. Dollar continuing to retreat from Thursday highs against yen. Crude steady after swinging to a decline overnight. Gold little changed. Bitcoin flat after pulling back to one-week low.

    • Fast moving developments on trade front after US Federal Appeals Court temporarily stayed Trade Court's ruling blocking tariffs imposed International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Temporary stay allows tariffs to remain on while appeals court considers the motion. Developments inject fresh uncertainty amid thoughts judicial wrangling could make for a longer and more uncertain negotiating process. Analysts have also pointed to different statutes White House could rely on to enact the tariffs.

    • Early reactions from Asian trade negotiating partners noted the court ruling though Taiwan said it will continue efforts to secure a trade deal. Japan PM Ishiba held another call with Trump to discuss tariffs and areas of cooperation, coming as Japan's top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is set to meet Treasury Secretary Bessent this week for fourth round of talks. Meanwhile, India's chief negotiator touted progress in trade talks and that he expects good outcome sooner than later.

    • Tokyo core inflation rose by more than expected in May to highest since Jan-2023. Ex-energy and food inflation also higher than expected though headline inflation unchanged against expectations for a slight increase. Elevated inflation backdrop seen backing case for BOJ tightening, coming after Governor Ueda this week reiterated degree of monetary easing will be adjusted if incoming data provides greater confidence that economic expectations will be met. .
