Synopsis:
Asian markets set for quiet start to Friday trade. Futures signaling muted opens in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures flat after US indexes ended lower amid fallout from Trump-Musk feud. Australian bonds weakening following earlier Treasury curve bear flattening. FX markets little changed with dollar flat against majors. Crude little changed after easing overnight. Gold also steady. Bitcoin down to one-month low.
Trump and Xi spoke by phone with Trump characterizing call as a positive. China state media offered more guarded take, pointing out call was initiated at Trump's request. Also stressed need to increase cooperation, reduce misunderstandings and for US to remove negative measures. Rare earths were a key aspect of recent flareup in tensions though Trump commented Geneva trade agreement is in good shape. Added that USTR Greer, Commerce Secretary Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Bessent will lead next round of talks shortly.
In other trade headlines, Japan's top negotiator Ryosei Akazawa heads to US for fifth round of talks after he reiterated demand for removal of tariffs. Vietnam holding third round of talks in early June with Nikkei noting authorities pledged efforts to combat transshipment of Chinese goods, which has been a key US complaint. Treasury Department's semiannual FX report concluded no country manipulated its currency but singled out China over lack of transparency.
On the economic calendar, US nonfarm payrolls forecast to show deceleration in headline jobs growth and unchanged unemployment rate last month. Some economists flagged downside risks from tariff impact on some sectors. Also follows Wednesday's ADP payrolls data that came in significantly below expectations and drove dovish repricing of Fed rate path. RBI expected to reduce interest rates by another 25 bp in keeping with its accommodative policy stance, as tariffs continue to cloud outlook and inflation continues moderating trend.
