Synopsis
European equity markets are set to open in negative territory amidst Asian equities mostly higher Thursday. Korea extending post-election rally though off best levels. Hong Kong also off highs with mainland indexes flat. Japan veering into negative territory. Tepid gains in Taiwan while Australia unchanged. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Bonds mixed with JGB curve bull flattening ahead of 30Y auction. Treasuries little changed following dovish reaction to soft data overnight. Dollar steady after nearing late April lows. Crude pulling back from earlier highs. Gold and Bitcoin unchanged.
On today's agenda, NATO defense ministers' meeting takes place. In Germany, in the afternoon, Chancellor Merz holds regular meeting with the State Premiers, a joint press conf is planned afterward. EU transport ministers' meeting and EU Digita Summit 2025. Also, Brussels Economic Security Forum, EU's Virkkunen delivers a speeches at both, EU's Šefčovič at the latter. In the UK, MPs debate on a motion on high street banking closures and banking hubs. Norwegian Offshore Directorate's Technology Day. Germany, UK May new car registrations.
In central banks, focus on ECB interest rate decision at 14:15CET, cut of 25bps in benchmark rate to 2.0% expected, post decision press conf 14:45. BOE's Greene speech at 8:45BST at ECONDAT conf. Bundesbank's Köhler-Geib panellist at 11:15CET at event hosted by European School of Management and Technology whilst Bundesbank's Mauderer speech at 17:00CET at ICMA AGM. ECB's Machado panellist at 15:10CET at EFDI International Conf. ECB media seminar 2025 (through Fri), speakers include ECB's Donnery at 11:30CET, Schnabel at 17:00. Slovakia central bank / SUERFconf whilst Czech central bank publishes latest Financial Stability Report.
Macroeconomic updates include: Germany Apr factory orders, May construction PMI, Switzerland May unemployment rate, UK May construction PMI, Italy Apr retail sales, Sweden May preliminary CPI, Eurozone Apr PPI, Ireland May unemployment rate.
In corporate news, Valmet (VALMT.FH) announced yesterday after the close new strategy, reiterated 2025 guidance and published new 2030 financial targets. This morning, Burckhardt Compression Holding (BCHN.SW) released FY earnings as well as announced upcoming changes in the board. Systemair (SYSR.SS) posted Q4 earnings and proposed a dividend of SEK1.35/share vs year-ago SEK1.20/share. In the UK, Wise (WISE.LN), Mitie Group (MTO.LN) and Wizz Air Holdings (WIZZ.LN) are expected to update the market with their most recent numbers.
On M&A front, L'Oreal (OR.FP) set to agree €1B deal to acquire skincare company Medik8, FT reported.
