  • Synopsis:

    • European indices ended lower on back of big ramp in Middle East tensions as Israel conducted air strikes against Iran's nuclear and military facilities and killed senior military officials and nuclear scientists. Oil spike the big area of concern with WTI crude up 7%. While no mention of Israel targeting Iranian crude facilities, strikes have revived concerns about potential for Iran to retaliate by disrupting shipments through Strait of Hormuz. Travel/Leisure and Auto/Parts the worst performers, while Oil/Gas the only sector in positive territory.

    • In macro-news, significant drop in Eurozone Industrial Production in April (2.4%) m/m vs cons (1.6%) and prior revised +2.4% from +2.6%, while Trade Balance surplus narrowed sharply to €9.9B vs consensus €18.2B and prior €36.8B. Also, focus on final in-line CPI readings from Germany, France and Spain. Elsewhere, update from UK's REC/KPMG showed firms scaled back hiring further in May. BRC footfall data showed activity weakened in May despite good weather; total UK footfall decreased by 1.7% y/y vs 7.2% increase in April. Meanwhile, Spanish PM Sanchez under pressure after a top aide quit over graft allegations.

    • In M&A news, Novo Banco's majority shareholder - Lone Star- signed a MoU for the sale of Novo Banco to BPCE. Credit Agricole (ACA.FP) bought a majority stake in COMWATT, Shell Plc (SHEL.LN) will sell its 49% stake in Australian onshore wind farm developer WestWind, Norconsult (NORCO.NO) acquired the Aas-Jakobsen Group based on EV of NOK1.43B, Sandberg Development AB sold ~ SEK 1.3B worth of shares in Camurus (CAMX.SS). Proximus (PROX.BB) sold its majority stake in Be-Mobile to Arrive based on an EV of €170M and local Italian press reported that Antin and CVC funds are in the running to acquire Exor (EXO.NA) Lifenet Healthcare. Elsewhere, Fraport (FRA.GR) and Flughafen Zuerich (FHZN.SW) posted traffic numbers, whilst Fiskars (FSKRS.FH) lowered its FY guidance.

    • Looking ahead to next week EU econ-calendar, notable releases on Monday will include, amongst others, Italy May final CPI and Switzerland May PPI.
