  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Monday trade. Futures signalling opening gains in Japan, and negative starts in Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures flat after US markets logged first down week in three. Australian bond yields reversing higher, taking cues from Treasury yield backup on Friday. Dollar firming against yen, steady elsewhere after touching early 2022 lows last week. Crude up another 2% though off initial highs. Gold flat near two-month high. Bitcoin little changed.

    • Middle East tensions remain elevated with Israel and Iran trading attacks for third day. Israel targeting its strikes on Iranian energy facilities and government buildings while Tehran continuing to respond with missile barrage. Market concern remains about potential for disruption to crude shipments via Strait of Hormuz, though oil analysts downplaying that likelihood given consequences for Iran and China. Trump holding out hope for negotiated outcome though also declined to rule out US participation.

    • G7 previews mainly focused Trump's bilateral meetings on trade though while Trump reportedly looking to show progress, White House officials dampening expectations of breakthroughs. Rare earths remain source of tensions between US and China following last week's London truce. Reports noted China did not commit to clearing exports of some specialized rare-earth magnets given ongoing US tech export curbs. On somewhat better note US and Vietnam reportedly close to reaching framework agreement.

    • Busy day of China data with activity indicators forecast to show industrial production and fixed asst investment steady in May while retail sales growth slowed. Housing data also on tap with property investment declines forecast to have deepened. Separate May data has shown deflation pressures persisting while manufacturing activity stuck in contraction. Economists noted China growth momentum tracking below government's 2025 forecasts amid tariff-driven external headwinds.

    • Central banks in focus this week with Fed (Wed) expected to hold but greater focus will be on updated SEP and dot plot. BOJ (Tues) expected to hold but markets focused on potential announcement on slowing pace of JGB purchase reductions. Japan May CPI (Fri) comes after Tokyo core inflation hit highest since Jan-2023. Japan trade data (Wed) follows preliminary figures showing slight export contraction in first 20 days of May. China expected to leave 1Y and 5Y loan prime rate (Fri). Australia May employment (Thurs) and New Zealand Q1 GDP (Thurs) also due out.
