Synopsis
European equity markets indicate a higher open amidst mixed session in Asia and lower US futures. Bonds steady. US 10-year at 4.39%. Dollar mostly softer. Oil gains. Gold down. Industrial metals lower.
In latest Middle East developments, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump will decide within two weeks whether to strike Iran. Extended timeline follows reports Wednesday Trump privately approved attack plans, but no final decision made. Trump's new diplomatic window due to "substantial" chance of negotiations and reports US envoy Witkoff engaging in behind-the-scenes talks with Iran's foreign minister. Crude still reactive to headline volatility, though some semblance of stabilization in recent days amid diplomacy talk.
On trade front, Japan's top negotiator Akazawa said he doesn't see 9-Jul as deadline for US trade negotiations and has yet to schedule next round of talks. Comes after PM Ishiba and Trump failed to make progress at G7 meeting with Trump saying Japan being too tough in trade talks. Japan's auto trade surplus with US said to be key sticking point negotiations. Elsewhere, Vietnam and US held online talks Thursday though nothing substantive on the key issues such as Chinese transshipment practices.
On the agenda for today in Europe, in central banks, ECB's latest Economic Bulletin released at 10:00CET. ECOFIN meeting, ECB's de Guindos, EU's Šefčovič among the participants. ECB's Machado panelist at 15:45CET at Bank of Spain Legal Conf. EU Health Council meeting. Italy hosts The Mattei Plan for Africa and the Global Gateway with PM Meloni and EU's von der Leyen among the participants.
Light on the earnings front today with Berkeley Group Holdings (BKG.LN) and Record (REC.LN) out of the UK scheduled to report.
In macroeconomic releases, Germany May PPI and UK May retail sales are due at 7:00 BST, followed by France Jun business confidence at 7:45 BST; Eurozone Jun flash consumer confidence is due at 15:00 BST.
