Jun 23 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan, Australia and Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures extending gains afterhours after Trump announced Israel-Iran ceasefire. Australian bonds strengthening after Treasury yields pulled lower overnight following Fed remarks outlining case for rate cut in July. Dollar weakening against other currencies. Crude under further pressure amid reduced Middle East tensions. Gold also pulling back. Bitcoin rebounding.

    • Markets processing de-escalation in Middle East tensions after President Trump announced on Truth Social that Israel and Iran agreed to 12-hour ceasefire. WTI crude back to pre-war levels, having more than unwound geopolitical premium built up over past week that was thought to have reflected risk of Iran disrupting crude shipments through Strait of Hormuz. Underwhelming Iranian response to US strikes had also been interpreted as intent to deescalate, which drove preceding selloff in crude.

    • US-China tensions have been another talking point following reports US weighing further tightening of tech export controls and White House official taking aim at DeepSeek over ties to China's military. Ford (~F~) joined other automakers in voicing difficulties procuring rare earths materials following US-China truce in London. At same time, China - which remains subject to 20% fentanyl tariffs - made further gesture by tightening scrutiny on two additional precursors.
