  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets mostly ended the day higher. After opening up, pan-European indices extended advances, reaching the days best levels around the middle of the morning, subsequently trading in an expanding range below the best levels of the session before breaking above those into the close.

    • Austria, Ireland, Portugal all up +1.2% join the CAC and DAX in leading outperformers. Greece (0.3%), Finland, Norway both +0.6% and Belgium, Switzerland both +0.8% join the FTSE100 in leading underperformers

    • A raft of economic data included worse than expected Jun preliminary CPI from France and Spain. There was also Denmark, Norway and Spain May retail sales, France May consumer spending as well as Eurozone Jun economic sentiment indicator 94.0 vs consensus 95.1 and prior 94.8.

    • SMMT's UK May data saw car and commercial vehicle production falling for the fifth consecutive month, and, excluding Covid impacted 2020, was the lowest performance for the month since 1949.

    • Bank of France's Villeroy spoke at award ceremony and presentation of report on banking inclusion. Bank of Finland's Rehn spoke and had fireside chat at conf. jointly hosted with ESRB on AI

    • Norway PM Støre held semi-annual summary press conf and Germany's Chancellor Merz hosted Austrian Chancellor Stocker.

    • On a slow day for earnings/updates Mediobanca (MB.IM) approved 2025-28 business plan, whilst Adidas (ADS.GR) and Puma (PUM.GR) got a boost following a strong set of Nike numbers overnight

    • M&A news flow included Akzo Nobel (AKZA.NA) to sell up to 75% of AkzoNobel India to JSW Group for €900M in net cash, Sika Group (SIKA.SW) acquires Qatar-based construction chemicals company Gulf Additive Factory LLC, Givaudan (GIVN.SW) acquired a majority stake in Vollmens Fragrances and RTL Group (RRTL.HR) signs definitive agreement to acquire Sky Deutschland for €150M upfront purchase price. Reportedly, Unilever (ULVR.LN) paying $1.5B (~€1.28B) for Dr Squatch and Centrica (CNA.LN) looks set to take a 15% stake in Sizewell C nuclear project.
