Synopsis:
Asian markets set for cautious open to Monday trade. Futures signaling flat starts in Japan and Hong Kong, and mild opening decline in Australia. S&P 500 futures remain lower as markets resume trade Monday following Independence Day holiday. Australian bonds strengthening. Dollar steady on major crosses. Crude weakening following larger-than-expected OPEC+ production hike. Gold flat. Bitcoin backing way from $110K.
Still some uncertainty whether Asian countries can secure trade agreements with US before 9-Jul tariff deadline. Trump repeated will be unilaterally imposing trade deal terms on 12 countries beginning Monday. Treasury Secretary Bessent warned of steep tariffs on countries that don't accept the terms and Commerce Secretary Lutnick revealed tariffs to take effect 1-Aug. Latest US-Japan talks faced familiar roadblocks over tariffs and market access, South Korea requested extension while India hardened stance by flagging retaliatory tariffs on US.
Main focus this week will be on trade talks ahead of 9-Jul tariff deadline. Central banks also headline economic calendar with RBA (Tues) expected to cut by 25 bp while RBNZ (Wed) and BOK (Thurs) expected to hold. FOMC minutes (Wed) come after Fed left rates on hold in June with SEP still showing two rate cuts through 2025. China CPI and PPI (Tues) forecast to show deflation pressures persisted in June. China loan data (unscheduled), Taiwan CPI and trade (Tues) some of the other notable data points.
