StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.26%, Hang Seng Futures (0.10%), ASX SPI 200 +0.48%, S&P Futures (0.05%)

Jul 09 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mostly positive start to Thursday trade. Futures siganling opening gains in Japan and Australia, and flat start in Hong Kong. S&P 500 futures unchanged afterhours. Australian bonds rebounding, taking cues from downshift in Treasury yields following well-received 10Y auction. Crude trading down slightly while gold flat. NY copper little changed following preceding spike to record high on Trump's tariff announcement. Bitcoin flat after claiming new record high.

    • President Trump issued more tariff letters on Wednesday, though mostly to small countries and reports continuing to highlight prospects of deals with bigger trading partners such as EU and India. Philippines hit with 20% tariff. Trump also threatened 50% tariffs on Brazil, citing unfair treatment of former President Bolsonaro. Markets have mostly looked past latest trade developments with Trump's tariff deadline extension and willingness to consider adjusting tariffs pending continued negotiations giving more support to TACO narrative.

    • June FOMC minutes noted some participants said they would be open to cut as soon as July, while others see most appropriate path could be no rate cuts at all this year. Tariff risk remains biggest overhang, with some saying it may take time for tariffs to raise prices though there remains considerable uncertainty. Futures continue to price in two rate cuts by year-end (Sep and Dec). White House pressure on Fed another talking point following more reports Trump wants his Fed chair nominee to cut interest rates.

    • Japan 20Y bond auction scheduled today, coming on the back of recent backup in superlong yields that saw both 20Y and 30Y rates push towards May highs. In other developments, FT sources noted NVDA planning to launch China-specific AI chip as soon as September with CEO Jensen Huang visiting Beijing next Wednesday. Reuters sources noted TikTok planning to launch US-specific version of app in bid to pave way for sale. Late Wednesday China State Council outlined modest policies to stabilize employment.
