Synopsis
European equity markets are set for a positive open. Follows modest gains in prior session. Asian equity markets mixed. Hang Seng underperforms. Kospi adds to recent gains. ASX lower. Nikkei little changed. US equity futures lower with S&P down 0.1%.
President Trump hardened tariff stance on Tuesday by foreshadowing copper tariffs of 50%, pharma tariffs of 200% and rejected suggestions of a tariff deadline extension beyond 1-Aug. Press said Trump's decision to delay came at urging of Treasury Secretary Bessent. Also vowed to soon hit BRICS nations with additional 10% tariff. Talks with major trading partners continue amid reports some deals close. However, countries such as Japan and South Korea maintaining their red lines. EU said to be close to framework agreement that locks in 10% baseline tariffs.
In central banks, ECB's Lane speech at 12:45CET on the monetary policy agenda at the House of the Euro and de Guindos gives closing remarks at 13:00 at event at Cursos de Verano CEU-El Escorial (Mon-Wed). Bundesbank's Nagel speech at 14:15CET at the Bundesbank-IAW lecture. BOE's Financial Stability Report published at 10:30BST, the same time as FPC meeting minutes. In Eastern Europe, Bank of Latvia's Kazāka meets with PM Siliņš, Croatia central bank Council meeting and Minutes from last meeting of Hungary central bank's MPC meeting. After EU markets close, release of minutes from last FOMC meeting.
9th OPEC International Seminar (through Wed). In the German Bundestag, Chancellor Merz speaks in the morning in a general debate and will answer questions from members of parliament in the afternoon. Later in the day hosts NATO's Rutte. In UK, after MPs questions on Scotland, weekly PMQs begins at 12noon BST and then The Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill moves through final stages. Committee topics include delivering major infrastructure: learning from HS2 at 9:15BST, UK economic security (Minister of State for Trade Policy and Economic Security) 13:30 and the cost of energy 15:00.
(CIRSA.SM) set to make its stock market debut on Spanish Stock Exchanges.
