Jul 14 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asia equities poised for a firmer open Tuesday. Futures in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia traded moderately higher. Japan ADRs were mixed while Nasdaq Golden Dragon China index advanced. US contracts reopened lower, retracing mild cash session gains in a generally uneventful session. Tech leads on the softer side with SOX index lower while Mag 7 and broader Big Tech group mixed. Treasuries unchanged to slightly weaker. Dollar index up 0.3%. Gold finished down 0.2%. Bitcoin futures up 1.4%, off best levels but still above $120K. WTI crude finished down 2.2%, reversing premarket strength, after gaining 2%+ last week. Copper ended off 0.9% after surging nearly 9% last week on tariff developments.

    • Market narrative mostly noted the unremarkable price action overnight despite Trump's threats of 30% tariffs on EU and Mexico. Modest upside in equities lent more credence to the TACO dynamic, backed up by Trump's subsequent qualifications that he is open to EU talks. However, press discussions highlighted challenges toward an EU deal. Furthermore, market strength prompting increasing discussion of potential market complacency where concerns are discouraging buying conviction. On upcoming risk events, Q2 earnings came into view alongside elevated attention on upcoming US CPI.

    • Regional macro developments mostly surrounded China data. Yesterday's releases of exports and credit were better than expected and takeaways generally benign with market expectations for policy stimulus fading while growth momentum remains relatively resilient against external turbulence. On the margins, attention went to a PBOC press briefing where Deputy Governor Zou Lan said they will closely monitor the impact of previously implemented easing while reaffirming its moderately loose policy stance. Also reiterated denials that China is seeking competitive yuan depreciation, continuing to push back against market speculation. Main event set to be China GDP and activity data -- consensus looks for Q2 GDP growth of 5.1% y/y which would leave H1 above the government target of around 5%, though June activity data expected to soften.
