  • Synopsis:

    • European equity markets closed mixed-to-lower and near worst levels. Tech, industrials and autos were the biggest decliners. Utilities, miners and media were the big gainers.

    • Tariff uncertainties linger ahead of 1-Aug deadline. Reports in Europe said EU diplomats exploring wide-ranging "anti-coercion" measures which would let the bloc target US services or curb access to public tenders in the absence of a deal. EU leaders to meet Japanese and Chinese counterparts this week. Low expectations for a deal with China, though European delegation could sign agreements with Japan on defense industry cooperation and economic security. Other main focus is earnings, with majority of EU companies beating estimates although only ~14% of STOXX 600 universe has reported.

    • Quiet macro calendar. UK public sector borrowing came in much higher than expected in June. Press touting potential pension reforms and increase in retirement age to put finances on a sustainable footing. BoE Governor Bailey told lawmakers that uncertainty of fiscal policy having impact on bond term premia, but UK not out of line with other markets. Elsewhere, survey by S&P Global showed UK households less pessimistic about their finances in the coming year. Elsewhere, BoE said to be considering shelving plans for digital pound amid skepticism over benefits.

    • In earnings news flow, out of DACHs, ALSO Holding (ALSN.SW), Dätwyler Holding (DAE.SW), Sartorius (SRT3.GR), Chocoladefabriken Lindt & Spruengli (LISN.SW), Givaudan (GIVN.SW) and Julius Baer Group (BAER.SW) reporting H1 earnings this morning. In France, Sartorius Stedim Biotech (DIM.FP) released prelim H1 earnings above expectations. In Nordics, Kesko (KESKOB.FH), Alfa Laval (ALFA.SS) and Norsk Hydro (NHY.NO) reported Q2 earnings with the latter cutting capital expenditure target for 2025 and noting a ~NOK 400M in impairments in Brazilian energy assets. In Benelux, Akzo Nobel (AKZA.NA) issued Q2 earnings update and trimmed FY25 adj EBITDA guidance due to ongoing market uncertainties ad FX rates. Out of the UK, Greencore Group (GNC.LN) reported Q3 revenue of £511.1M, a 9.9% y/y increase, and raised its FY adjusted operating profit guidance to £118-121M. Compass Group (CPG.LN) issued Q3 trading update with organic revenue +8.6% vs consensus +7.6% and upgraded FY25 guidance. Compass also announced the acquisition of Vermaat Groep B.V. for approximately €1.5B, expected to be accretive to margins and EPS.

    • Further in M&A headlines out of the UK, Centrica (CNA.LN) to acquire 15% equity stake in Sizewell C for £1.3B. Elsewhere, Sanofi (SAN.FP) to acquire Vicebio for up to $1.60B. Media reports UniCredit (UCG.IM) is set to increase its stake in Commerzbank (CBK.GR) by converting another 8% of derivatives to 28%. Also, in market rumours, El Confidencial reports Orange (ORA.FP) is willing to offer €4B to Cinven, KKR (KKR), and Providence for 50% of MasOrange (+MASORANGE.SM).

    • In other notable corporate updates, AstraZeneca (AZN.LN) announced $50B of investment in the United States by 2030, building on America's global leadership in medicines manufacturing and R&D.
