StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +1.20%, Hang Seng Futures (0.08%), ASX SPI 200 +0.26%, S&P Futures +0.11%

Jul 23 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Thursday trade. Futures indicating solid opening gains in Japan, flat start in Hong Kong and mildly positive open in Australia. S&P 500 futures unchanged after posting another record high. Australian bond yields higher along the curve, tracking earlier Treasury curve bear flattening. Dollar retreating against yen and Aussie, steady elsewhere. Crude consolidating after lifting from lows. Gold flat. Bitcoin continues to fluctuate around $120K.

    • Trade developments fuelling risk-on move in markets with latest reports noting US and EU nearing deal that would impose a 15% tariff on European imports (including autos). Follows streak of trade deal announcements this week that culminated in agreements with Japan, Indonesia and Philippines. From Asia perspective, attention now centers on South Korea, whose officials travel Washington this week with analysts hoping country will secure similar relief. Meanwhile, Trump suggested new global baseline tariff would not be below 15% and could be as high as 50%.

    • US tech companies reporting afterhours. ~TSLA~ missed on bottom line, citing (tariff-driven) macro uncertainty contributing to reduced deliveries and lower average selling price. Musk flagged "rough" quarters ahead (reflecting elimination of EV tax credit), while continuing to talk up robotaxi rollout by end-2025. ~GOOGL~ revenue topped forecasts with strong demand for cloud services prompting capex guidance upgrade. ~IBM~ software sales underwhelmed though group touted acceleration of GenAI bookings.

    • In other developments, South Korea Q2 GDP came in just ahead of expectations, led by rebound in private consumption and strong growth in exports. SK Hynix (~000660.KS~) earnings topped forecasts, underpinned by DRAM revenue beat. Group also guided capex higher and flagged favorable pricing conditions ahead amid continued demand growth. EU-China leaders' summit begins Thursday though expectations are low amid divisions over China's support for Russia and Beijing's trade practices.
