Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan, Hong Kong and Australia. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian bond yields down slightly after Treasuries weakened Monday following mixed auction result. Dollar steady after staging broad rally in aftermath of US-EU trade deal. Crude little changed after hitting one-week high. Gold flat. Bitcoin unchanged.
No information emerged from US-China talks on Monday with officials to resume negotiations on Tuesday. Commerce Secretary Lutnick said 90-day extension of US-China tariff deadline is likely outcome of talks, adding weight to SCMP article that first reported details of an extension. Other articles have highlighted US efforts to smooth path towards Trump-Xi summit, including by freezing tech export controls while Reuters sources noted Taiwan President Lai Ching-te was set to delay trip that would have included US stopover.
Elsewhere on trade front, Nikkei reported Japan working on framework to monitor progress on implementation of US trade deal after US threatened future tariff hikes if Tokyo isn't fulfilling commitments. President Trump intends to resume talks with Thailand and Cambodia after two sides agreed to halt fighting. In other developments, Japan PM Ishiba insisted he intends to stay on as leader following meeting of LDP members on Monday. Indonesia flagged fresh stimulus to boost growth.
