Jul 29 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for negative start to Wednesday trade. Futures signaling opening declines in Japan and Hong Kong, and flat start in Australia. S&P 500 futures flat afterhours. Australian bonds strengthening, taking cues from earlier Treasury curve bull flattening. FX markets steady after dollar built on preceding strength against euro. Crude steady following Tuesday rally after Trump dismissed concerns about impact of Russian sanctions. Gold also unchanged. Bitcoin continues to fluctuate in range.

    • US and China wrapped up two days of talks in Stockholm with no major breakthroughs beyond noting discussions were constructive and progress being made on flow of rare earths. However, signs divisions over China purchases of sanctioned Russian crude, which Bessent said would be key topic of discussion. There was speculation two sides would agree to tariff deadline extension though Bessent noted final decision will be left to Trump. Bessent added likely to be another meeting in about 90 days and Trump said he believes he will meet President Xi later this year.

    • On the economic calendar, Australian Q2 CPI forecast to show little change in headline and trimmed mean inflation. Data may crystalize likelihood of August RBA rate cut provided no meaningful overshoot. At same time, RBA mindful of potential for disinflationary stall. Fed expected to leave policy unchanged with previews expecting continued emphasis on data dependence. Chair Powell expected to push narrative more time needed to assess tariff impact, and he is not anticipated to offer much of a hint on September cut. Biggest focus will be on potential for two dissents, after Governors Bowman and Waller recently called for July cut.
