StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.18%, Hang Seng Futures (0.97%), ASX SPI 200 +0.29%, S&P Futures +0.75%

Jul 30 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for positive start to Thursday trade. Futures signaling opening gain in Japan and Australia, and negative start in Hong Kong. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures strengthening with ~MSFT~ and ~META~ seeing big afterhours gains following earnings. Australian bonds weakening after Treasury curve bear flattened following hawkish Fed takeaways. Dollar easing slightly against majors. Crude adding to overnight gains while gold remains lower. NY copper nursing record drop. Bitcoin remains range bound.

    • Market processing flurry of trade developments, headlined by Trump announcing South Korea trade deal establishing 15% tariff, Korean investment and purchase commitments. Trump sounded more pessimistic on India, threatening 25% tariff from Friday. However, added talks with Delhi are continuing. Trump imposed additional 40% tariff on Brazil (taking total to 50%) amid trade and political disagreements (though excluded aircraft, energy and orange juice). Also ended de minimis exemption, subjecting US goods imports worth $800 or less to tariffs. Trump's 50% copper tariff less severe than feared after excluding refined products.

    • BOJ expected to leave interest rates unchanged. Source reports noted central bank expected to raise FY25 inflation forecasts, though this is unlikely to have bearing on today's rate decision. Deputy Governor Uchida recently acknowledged US-Japan trade deal but reiterated uncertainties remain high. However, Bloomberg sources noted BOJ still sees possibility of another rate hike by year-end if uncertainties diminish. Market pricing and economist consensus on potential rate hike looking to October while futures pricing in 75% chance of rate hike by year-end.

    • China PMIs forecast to show little change in manufacturing and non-manufacturing activity this month, continuing recent stabilization trend. At July Politburo meeting leaders refrained from announcing fresh stimulus and tempered bearish language on economy. Noted macro policies must remain robust and strengthened when necessary, with liquidity kept ample. Focus instead remained on addressing industrial overcapacity and excessive price competition.
