Synopsis:
Asian markets set for negative start to Monday trade. Futures signaling steep opening declines in Japan while Australia and Hong Kong tracking for milder losses. S&P 500 futures flat following Friday's risk-off session in wake of soft US payrolls data. Treasuries bull steepened as jobs data strengthened Fed rate cut odds. Dollar nursing heavy decline with yen among biggest gainers. Crude pulling lower following latest outsized OPEC+ production hike that didn't include signal about future increases. Gold adding to Friday's gains. Bitcoin steady after nearing early July lows.
Fallout continues from President Trump's tariff announcements as countries facing steepest levies weigh their response. Switzerland (39% tariff), Brazil (50%) tariff and Canada (25% tariff) indicated openness to negotiating trade deals. Press sources noted India remains engaged in talks with US, even as officials struck note of defiance against the 25% tariff and US criticisms of Delhi's support for Moscow. White House giving more positive signals on direction of US-China trade talks with Treasury Secretary Bessent flagging makings of a trade deal.
