  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Tuesday trade. Futures signaling opening gains in Japan and Australia, and flat start in Hong Kong. US contracts up slightly afterhours. Australian bonds rallying in bull steepening move (market was closed Monday). Treasuries were little changed Monday following big Friday rally. Dollar weakening against yen. Crude flat following overnight retreat in wake of latest OPEC+ production hike. Gold steady. NY copper continues to nudge higher following last week's plunge. Bitcoin recovering from early July lows.

    • US markets rallied overnight following weekend focus on soft July payrolls data that raised concerns about labour market cracks but also strengthened Fed rate cut expectations. Big tech led rebound amid focus on positive earnings outlook and AI secular growth theme. Nasdaq Golden Dragon index and TSMC ADRs up 1% and 2% respectively. Looking ahead, RBI expected to leave policy unchanged. South Korea CPI, Caixin China services PMI and BOJ minutes among data points of note. Japan 10Y bond auction also scheduled following Monday downshift in yields.

    • US-India tensions notching higher after President Trump threatened to substantially hike tariffs over Delhi's purchases of Russian oil. Comes after Trump imposed 25% tariff on India last week and threatened unspecified higher duties over India's Russian energy purchases. India has struck defiant tone in recent days, reaffirming ties with Moscow and denying reports its refiners were asked to stop buying Russian crude. India called Trump's latest tariff threat "unjustified and unreasonable' though press sources have noted officials remain engaged with US.
