  • Synopsis:

    • European indices ended mostly higher Tuesday. Italy outperforms. France and Netherlands buck the firmer trend. Follows broad strength on Monday. In sectors, Autos and Food/Beverage led gainers; Personal/HHold Goods, Utilities and Banks the main laggards.

    • On the macro data front, big jump in French industrial production in June. UK new car sales fell (5%) y/y in July. Attention to final PMIs from Eurozone. Business activity expanded at slightly faster pace in July, though growth remained subdued amid persistent demand challenges. Services led improvement, with sector PMI climbing to 51.0 from 50.5. Spain and Italy drove growth, while Germany returned to expansion territory after months of contraction. However, France continued declining for eleventh consecutive month, weighing on overall regional performance. UK saw decent upward revision with composite reading at 51.5 versus flash 51 and prior 52.0, while services sector PMI at 51.8 versus flash 51.2 and prior 52.8. Also out, Eurozone June PPI inline with consensus +0.8% and up from prior (0.6%).

    • Economists evaluate BoE outlook ahead of Thursday policy decision. Growing cohort of economists expect as many as six more rate cuts might be needed over the next year to support economy. In other news, data on international retail shows Britons are shunning UK stores in favor of tax-free spending in the EU. Elsewhere, Germany received the go-ahead from the EU for more than half of its planned gas-plant expansion.

    • In corporate earnings, several DACH names including Continental (CON.GR), Fresenius Medical Care (FME.GR), DHL Group (DHL.GR), Adecco Group (ADEN.SW), Fraport (FRA.GR), Infineon Technologies (IFX.GR), OC Oerlikon Corp. (OERL.SW) and Hugo Boss (BOSS.GR) reported earlier this morning; also, Gerresheimer (GXI.GR) announced it will separate its moulded glass business and intended to initiate subsequent sales process. In the UK, BP.LN (BP), Smith & Nephew (SN.LN) and Diageo (DG.LN) also issued their Q2/H1 numbers, whilst in France. Eutelsat Communications (ETL.FP) posted FY results. In Italy, Telecom Italia (TIT.IM) released its Q2 and confirmed all guidance for the year.

    • In M&A news, Shelf Drilling (SHLF.NO) received a cash merger offer from ADES and Colas (EN.FP) signed an agreement to acquire 100% of Suit-Kote for >$450M.

    • Looking ahead to tomorrow's EU econ-calendar, notable releases will include, amongst others, Germany Jun factory orders, Jul construction PMI, Italy Jun industrial production, UK Jul construction PMI and Eurozone Jun retail sales.
