StreetAccount Summary - Asian Market Preview: Nikkei Futures +0.41%, Hang Seng Futures (0.64%), ASX SPI 200 (0.28%), S&P Futures +0.16%

Aug 07 ,2025

  • Synopsis:

    • Asian markets set for mixed start to Friday trade. Futures signaling opening decline in Hong Kong and Australia, and mildly positive start in Japan. S&P 500 futures gaining afterhours. Australian bonds little changed after Treasuries weakened overnight. Dollar down against yen, sterling the notable gainer overnight on hawkish BOE cut. Crude flat after logging sixth-straight decline. Broad-based gains in precious and industrial metals complex. Bitcoin unchanged after rebounding to one-week high.

    • Not much in way of offshore leads following uneventful US session. Market unable to sustain earlier bounce from Trump chip tariff carve-outs though big tech was mostly higher with AAPL extending rally following latest US investment pledge. More Fed personnel speculation with reports noting Governor Waller leading contender to succeed Powell. Trump also said he'd nominate CEA Chair Miran to Fed Board. Other development was Treasury curve bear flattening following weak 30Y auction, offsetting preceding downward pull from pickup in Fed rate cut expectations.

    • Nothing incremental on trade with India tariffs still generating discussion. Publicly, Delhi striking defiant stance though sources note officials weighing trade concessions to US. Articles also discussed lobbying efforts by other countries to secure exemptions while others highlighting conflicting interpretations of US-Japan agreement and uncertainty around when auto tariffs will reduce. Commerce Secretary Lutnick the latest to signal likely 90-day extension of China tariff deadline. Baseline tariffs went into effect though more talk about likely stagflationary effects.
