Synopsis:
European equity markets ended mostly firmer, with pan-European indices closing just off best levels. Austria +2.5%, Greece +1.4% and Germany +1.0% led the outperformers, while the FTSE100 (0.7%), Norway (0.3%) and Finland (0.1%) were the main laggards.
Markets welcoming Trump's carve-out from looming 100% tariff on semiconductors, which will exclude companies building in US or have made investment commitments. However, some details lacking ahead of formal announcement, including extent of US investment that will qualify companies for tariff relief. As foreshadowed, President Trump imposed additional 25% rate on India over its purchases of Russian crude (taking total tariff to 50%). Also did not rule out secondary sanctions on China over its Russian crude buys.
In geopolitical news, Putin aide confirmed Trump would meet Putin in coming days in bid to end Ukraine war.
Macro focus in Europe on BoE policy update. Bank cut rates to 4% as expected but opened door to pause in easing with a tight 5-4 vote. Markets now discount no further cuts in 2025. ECB bulletin highlighted easing inflationary pressures and softer wage growth. Data includes weak German industrial production and narrower-than-expected trade data. Halifax UK house price data close to expectations with modest increase in July.
